5 Things to Ask Yourself When Starting a Brand
Are you starting a brand or selling a product?
These may sound like the same thing, but they absolutely are not! Ask yourself deeply, is what you want to do starting a brand? Where you’ll have to come up with messaging, run platforms, and build designs for yourself? This is a very fun thought, but it’s more intensive than simply selling a product on it’s own. What do you picture yourself doing with your business?
What platforms do you want to use for marketing?
For anyone who’s on Instagram as often as I am (*cough* way too often) this may seem like an easy thought, but for those that aren’t, let’s dive in a little bit! The most common marketing platforms are as such:
- Email Marketing
Do you know anything about these? Which one is your favorite, that you could see spending some definite time every week on or considering? Do you prefer one type of media over another? This also goes deeper into the next point which is….
Who do you want to sell to?
This is maybe your most important question when considering the previous bullet point. Who do you want to sell to? That’s a bit of a generic question, but it’s going to be the basis of marketing your brand or product out! Let’s break it down a little bit more:
- What do they look like?
- Where (in the world) do they live?
- What’s their occupation?
- Why do they need your product/brand/service?
Consider all of these points when thinking about your audience and where you want to market your product, write it down!
What’s your competition look like?
This one is a fairly easy task, all you have to do is shop around! Who else is thinking about things the way you might be? What makes you different, better, or the same? What do you think they’re doing horrible wrong, and what is amazingly right? These are all important questions to ask yourself when considering starting a brand or selling a product!
What are your strengths and weaknesses?
Seems a bit trivial, but if we’re honest with ourselves, there’s things we aren’t good at and things we are! What excites you most about running your own brand or selling a product? What fills you with dread to think about? Be honest! This is important to consider for yourself so you can recognize what parts of the business may need some extra attention or help due to your feelings on it. OR what parts of the process do you want to do first and last? Is designing (something we’ll talk about in a later post) your thing or is it an absolute nightmare? If it’s your favorite, maybe save the best ‘till last! Or maybe get it done!
Mostly, just remember that starting this process is a process in itself, be methodical and honest with yourself, and take deep breaths while you consider all of this!
